A freelancer is person who works for oneself rather than for an organization, agency or consultancy. It has increased the awareness of freelancing and a lot of people mainly housewives, mothers who wish to juggle a career and personal life, retired servicemen and students are opting to get into freelancing. In fact it has opened a lot of rewarding career choices for those who prior to this had no options but to sit at home. For example a retired person can become a consultant, a career counselor, a mentor or even freelance in the previous job depending on the organization.

    • Flexibility in working hours: One can decide how long and which part of the day he/she want to work
    • Variety in the nature of work done: The work done is not the same each day. They can choose the work they want to do according to their interests.
    • Own Boss: Does not need to report in to anyone. Can be one's own boss and decide on the work done.
    • Time saved: A lot time is saved by reducing the need to travel and attend various meetings that are part of a regular job
    • Creativity: Freelancing allows an individual to express oneself creatively and make use of their creativity and not be stuck to a monotonous job

  • Disadvantages
    • Freelancers miss out on working in a team and the working environment
    • They do not have benefits of working in an organization like insurance, provident fund etc.
    • One should be more responsible and accountable for one's job and be more self motivated
    • Work is not steady
